WoodStepper is a versatile tool that combines a sequencer, synthesizer, and sampler. It allows you to create music with both audio and MIDI outputs. You can use various audio sources, such as track audio, sampled audio, or the built-in VCOs. If you want to enhance your music, the Chordulator feature helps to identify chord notes from a live stream or recorded track.

The app includes 4 independent sequencers, each with 8 steps. These sequencers can be linked together to form a longer sequence of 16, 24, or even 32 steps. Each sequencer can also be set to Synth mode, allowing for step automation while you play. This flexibility means that WoodStepper can be used in a variety of ways, mixing sequencers, synths, and looper/samplers to suit your creative needs.

Each step in the sequencer can send up to 4 MIDI messages across 2 MIDI channels. You’ll find that the audio part for each sequencer includes features like a pitch shifter, a 4-pole Moog lowpass filter with an ADSR envelope, a saturation control, and a delay line. These features can all be adjusted independently for each step, giving you extensive customization options.

You can set the VCO notes using MIDI input. Additionally, WoodStepper has a function to limit the notes produced by the VCO and pitch shifters to a specific key and interval scale. This makes it easier to stay within your desired musical structure. The app can function as a stand-alone app with device audio input and output, or it can be used as a plugin in a DAW for more integrated workflows.

The audio sources for your projects can be live audio sampling, track audio, or sampled audio that you can load from files stored in the WoodStepper iCloud folder. Each sequencer comes with its own gain control, a clipping LED, and a brick-wall limiter to manage your audio levels effectively.

WoodStepper offers a full polyphonic mode that sends 4 subsequent note-ons to the sequencers or synths. In para-polyphonic mode, you can send notes 2 and 3 to VCOs for more complex sound layering, allowing for a maximum of 12 voices. Each sequencer and synth provides the option to set the range of receiving MIDI notes, which can accommodate up to 4 split keyboard regions.

For added creativity, each step includes a pitch down shifter with glide control. You can set pitch values to be harmonically locked to either the Just Scale or the Equally Tempered Scale. This means you can create music that fits well within different musical frameworks. The 4-pole lowpass filter offers resonance control and works alongside ADSR envelopes for sequencers or ADSR for synths.

Every step also includes a high-pass filter, amplitude envelope, and a gain control, along with a delay line that has independent timing, feedback, and filtering. You can pan both the step audio and the delay independently, allowing for expansive sound design.

WoodStepper offers multiple start and stop options. You can start sequencers manually, sync them with your DAW transport, begin them after receiving a MIDI note, or set them to start in audio gated mode. Sequencers can also be stopped either manually or after they have played a specified number of bars.

The app features buttons that let you play a single step for fine-tuning settings or adjust all steps together with an “All Steps” button. There’s global control for dry/wet mixing, input gain, and output gain. Presets can be stored in iCloud, making them accessible on all your devices. You can switch presets using MIDI Program Changes or with the "Next Preset" button while the app is in use.
