About the App
Tomofon is a unique virtual instrument designed around an innovative “Audio Model” format. This format allows you to work with thousands of waves extracted from regular audio files. These waves are carefully structured to let Tomofon generate audio that is highly flexible, providing an instantly expressive sound. It can create sounds that are very organic and lifelike, as well as those that feel otherworldly. You can explore the included Audio Model Starter Pack, which features various instruments and voice presets, or import your own audio files to create unique soundscapes. With Tomofon, you're set for a creative journey.
So, how does Tomofon work? It converts your audio files into a large collection of oscillating waves. These waves are mapped into pitch zones, where each wave acts as a layer, making it similar to how a sampler organizes different velocity zones. The key difference is that Tomofon uses waves rather than standard samples, which allows its synth engine to morph easily between layers and zones. This results in continuous audio transitions that are seamless and fluid.
Another fantastic feature of Tomofon is its ability to let users import their own audio files, enabling the creation of new and unique Audio Models. Ordinary audio files, especially those with monophonic content, can be imported into various pitch zones over the keyboard range. You can choose to do this automatically or manually. Automatic import is a simple one-click process that creates a playable Audio Model right away. If you prefer more control, manual import lets you decide which waves should go into which pitch zone. You can also share your custom Audio Models with others, making collaboration easy.
Tomofon comes pre-loaded with a collection of 124 Audio Models based on high quality audio recordings that capture a range of expressions. These models include a variety of instruments, such as strings, vocals, brass, woodwind, guitars, and more. In addition, there are over 180 factory presets to help you get started quickly. Once you’re comfortable, you can venture into creating your own Audio Models using your audio files and experiment with the different sounds they can produce.
Tomofon offers several features to enhance your music-making experience. The integrated audio sample importer and Audio Model editor make it easy to manage your sounds. You can utilize pitch depth envelopes, which can be edited, giving you further creative control. The envelope times can also be adjusted separately using MIDI velocity, offering more ways to shape your sound.
With LFO modulation options, including randomness, and a modulation matrix that allows two MIDI CC inputs, you have significant flexibility in how you manipulate your audio. Tomofon supports monophonic playback mode, allowing separate glide times for pitch and velocity. It also offers polyphonic legato playback, which syncs envelopes with currently playing notes for fluid transitions.
You can create unique voices using up to 4 doubling voices, each with separate pitch control, pan, and level settings. Additional features include post reverb effects, delay effects in audio, and EQ adjustments to finely tune your sounds. With Tomofon, the possibilities for expression-based audio synthesis are vast, allowing you to explore new creative horizons in music. Whether you’re a musician, producer, or sound designer, Tomofon provides the tools to inspire and innovate in your audio journey.
