About the App

SoundSaw is a user-friendly sound processing app that lets you distort the sound of musical instruments or voice. It brings to life the aesthetics of noise, lo-fi music, chiptune sound design, and the experimental music scene. With just a few controls, you can achieve light distortion effects for a more natural and lively sound, or you can push the limits to create harsh sound alterations filled with harmonics and crackles.

This app provides many opportunities for creative experimentation with sound destruction. All controls are clearly displayed on a single screen and grouped into six sections. From the "Input" section to the "Output" section, the layout ensures a smooth signal path, allowing you to explore different effects within a wide range of settings.

SoundSaw simulates various types of signal processing circuits, giving you options for both static and dynamic noise effects. For noticeable distortions and feedback control, the Maximizer maintains the maximum signal level. It also has a unique mode that holds the maximum volume when the input signal loses strength.

The Overload effect acts like an electronic circuit, applying saturation and producing various kinds of harmonics when the signal exceeds the maximum allowable level. If you're interested in creating digital artifacts, the app includes Decimator and Bitcrusher effects. These effects emulate the sound of low-quality devices with simple DACs and ADCs, adding crackles and rattles to your music.

You can also control feedback with the app's specialized effect, which resembles acoustic feedback but allows for more precise adjustments. The resonant frequency of this effect varies based on the harmonics of your input signal. After using distortion effects, a 4-pole filter, controlled by an envelope generator, allows you to further shape your sound. You can apply high pass filtering, low pass filtering, band pass filtering, or notch filtering to get the desired result.

The envelope generator itself can react to the input signal, creating a single cycle of modulation, repeating cycles, or working continuously. At the output stage, there is also a filter that can cut certain high or low ranges of the original signal, blending it with your processed sound.

SoundSaw works seamlessly on both iOS and macOS. You can use it on your iPhone and iPad or on a Mac or MacBook equipped with the M1 chip and later models. On mobile devices, SoundSaw operates as a standalone app, an Audio Unit, or an Inter-App Audio module, and it fully supports Audiobus and Ableton Link for easy integration with other music tools. On macOS, it can function as a standalone application or an AUv3 plugin with various DAWs, such as Ableton Live, Logic Pro, GarageBand, MainStage, Cockos Reaper, and Plogue Bidule.

All features are available on both iOS and macOS, including MIDI support with a helpful MIDI learn functionality. You’ll find detailed parameter descriptions directly in the app, and these are also available as a PDF document on the application site.
