About the App

The Antikythera Mechanism app offers a fascinating simulation of the world's first computer, an ancient Greek device discovered by chance about a century ago in an extraordinary shipwreck. This app lets you experience and explore how ancient civilizations understood the cosmos.

With the Antikythera Mechanism, you can control the crank input using a point slider located at the bottom of the screen. This feature allows you to perform clockwise and anti-clockwise motion at varying speeds. You can easily navigate around the mechanism with the swipe rotate feature and the pinch zoom feature. For a better view, there’s also a point slide on the side for vertical panning. You can rotate the Calendar dial using the + and - controls found in the bottom left corner.

The app provides two viewing modes at the top of the screen. The external viewing mode gives you a detailed dial inspection, while the internal viewing mode allows you to look closely at the gear arrangements that drive all eight outputs of the mechanism.

Please be aware of the app's high graphics requirements. It runs smoothly only on the latest three generations of iPhone and the latest two generations of iPad.

The Antikythera Mechanism is not just a simulation; it serves as an interactive educational tool. You can engage in a user-controlled simulation, enhancing your understanding of this historical technology. This application is an excellent resource for mechanical engineering exploration and archeological artifact analysis.

With its motion control features and digital representation, the Antikythera Mechanism app provides insights into device functionality and opens a window into historical astronomy. It’s a perfect educational app for anyone interested in ancient mechanics exploration and serves as a valuable technical learning resource. Through this 3D simulation application, you can dive into a remarkable piece of history and enhance your appreciation for ancient innovations.
