About the App
Otoo is a simple, one-screen groovebox designed for making music easily. This app focuses on giving you a smooth and enjoyable experience for music production.
At the heart of Otoo is a unique free-form step sequencer. Unlike traditional grids, this sequencer lets you freely place, drag, and stack notes across different rows. Whether you’re sketching out ideas using Otoo’s native built-in engine and sampler or using your favorite AUv3 plugins, the app creates a distraction-free environment that helps you stay focused and promotes musical flow.
On your iPhone, Otoo’s interface adapts to give your AUv3 instruments a nearly fullscreen view. It also features a compact keyboard that is highly responsive, making it easy for you to create music on the go.
Otoo includes Otoo MIDI, which acts as a MIDI processor version of the app. This feature allows you to bring Otoo’s pattern-based sequencing into compatible AUv3 hosts. This means playback will follow the host timeline, and the instruments will be routed as MIDI Out destinations instead of audio instruments.
The app has a distraction-free workflow. The straightforward single-screen layout lets you see your sequence, arrangement, and mixer at all times, so you won’t need to dive into menus. The free-form step sequencer enables you to place, drag, and stack notes across any row without being held back by instrument or track limitations. In step editing mode, you can gain precise control over note length, velocity, and timing subdivisions. The gesture-driven mixer allows for real-time volume adjustments, muting, and soloing tracks right from the main grid. You can have 4 rows on your iPhone and 5 on your iPad, with multiple instruments spread across the different steps.
With Otoo, you have access to built-in sounds and a sampler that allows for instant key-by-key recording and chromatic mapping. You can work with up to 8 instruments per project, and use any installed AUv3 instruments in a large, near-fullscreen view alongside the compact keyboard. Each instrument can also have up to 2 AUv3 effects added to it.
Building songs from simple patterns is easy with Otoo. You can create your arrangements by using draggable loop markers, allowing you to make quick changes whenever needed.
In performance mode, Otoo provides a live sequencer with various audio effects, such as reverse, beat repeat, randomize, swing, triplet, and tape. You can even play the pattern like a keyboard by tapping the steps directly.
Otoo comes with several additional features. The main output includes built-in level protection. An automatic metronome kicks in when you’re recording live into empty patterns, so you can easily stay in time. You can export your patterns as WAV files or full songs as MP3s, making sharing easy. Additionally, you can export performances as perfect loops, and MIDI export is also available. The app supports various time signatures, including 4/4, 3/4, and 4/4T, along with sequencer swing.
Overall, Otoo is a powerful tool for anyone looking to turn their musical ideas into reality, all while providing a clear and engaging interface. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned musician, Otoo makes it easy to refine your craft and create full songs from patterns.
