BA-1 has a rich history. It is inspired by a portable synth from the 1980s, known for its toylike appearance and gritty sound. Despite its small size, this original model significantly influenced music, especially in Sweden, where it became a hidden gem for bubbly synth textures favored by top pop producers. It also played a key role in 1990s digital dancehall and was loved in the indietronica scene for its raw lo-fi quality. Capturing the essence of that original hardware in software form was a challenge we embraced with BA-1.

In line with our motto, “it’s an evolution, not an emulation,” we’ve faithfully modeled the original hardware. But we took it a step further. The BA-1 features a second analog-modeled oscillator, FM synthesis, polyphony, and other enhancements that broaden the range of sounds while preserving that signature quality. You can even drain the battery, bend circuits, and use the built-in speaker, which helps create an authentic lo-fi aesthetic usually found only in hardware.

We take pride in our effects, and BA-1 features a dedicated effects chain inspired by budget 1980s rack hardware. This chain perfectly captures the lo-fi charm that characterized the home studio vibe of that era.
